Fascinating Coin Fact

Columbian Exposition Commemorative Quarter - Queen Isabella of SpainThe first United States commemorative quarter was made in 1893 for the Columbian Exposition being held in Chicago. The Board of Lady Managers of the fair sponsored it, and profits from sales of the coins went to support their organization.

The obverse of this coin shows a crowned bust of Queen Isabella of Spain, the only foreign monarch ever depicted on a United States coin. The kneeling female on the reverse, holding a distaff and spindle, is emblematic of women’s industry.
